KONY2012.......really???

Try and read the whole thing its really not that long. Yes, i know its not a cool video with emotive music, state of the art editing (funded by millions of dollars of charity money) and a cute little kid but it only took me 1 minute and 59 seconds to read and there are a couple of pictures and a video for those who make it to the end...

KONY2012

So, the vague figure of "more than" 30 000 has been bandied around as the number of children that have been abducted and enslaved in Uganda by the Joseph Kony led LRA. I feel it is important to note that this occurred over a period of approximately 26 years. So that works out to a tad over one thousand abductions a year on average. Also important to note are reports that Joseph Kony has not been active in Uganda since 2006, this fact confirmed with a very brief mention in KONY2012. Kony is believed to be in nearby Sudan or Congo now.

So let me get this straight, the plan is to help fund the Ugandan army and put pressure on the US government to assist an incredibly corrupt (another story for another time) Ugandan government capture a man who hasnt been in the country for the last 6 years???

I feel like now is as good a time as ever to bring up the fact that according to data gathered and reported by the United Nations (UN) in their annual Human Development Report in 2007 that 51.5% of the then 31 million Ugandans lived below the internationally recognised poverty line of LESS THAN $1.25 A DAY!!!

For those who are not so good with numbers let me put it straight for you.

In 2007 approximately:

0 Ugandans were abducted by Josesph Kony and the LRA

however,

15.5 million Ugandans were considered to be living in poverty

File:Percentage population living on less than $1.25 per day 2009.svg
- This picture shows the % of populations living in poverty (on less than $1.25 per day)

For those who dont know how to interpret or cant see the legend, red = real bad
and for those with poor geography knowledge more than half of Africa = red

If my memory of the principles of simultaneous equations is correct then i get,

more than half of Africa =   real bad

Camp in darfur for displaced people
- This picture was taken at a Darfur refugee camp in the neighboring Sudan, one of Joseph Kony's potential countries of occupancy. Darfur refugee camps are estimated to have a population totaling 2-3 million all of whom are living in  poverty

In case you are not questioning the premise of the KONY2012 campaign yet here's a quote from a Ugandan Journalist by the name of Angelo Izama,

"To call the campaign a misrepresentation is an understatement. While it draws attention to the fact that Kony, indicted for war crimes by the International Criminal Court in 2005, is still on the loose, its portrayal of his alleged crimes in Northern Uganda are from a bygone era. At the height of the war, especially between 1999 and 2004, large hordes of children took refuge on the streets of Gulu town to escape the horrors of abduction and brutal conscriptions to the ranks of the LRA. Today most of these children are semi adults. Many are still on the streets unemployed. Gulu has the highest number of child prostitutes in Uganda, It also has one of the higest rates of HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis."

So,

I'm asking you to reconsider the facts, maybe research some facts yourself and then decide,

Are you just jumping on another pop culture bandwagon without really knowing what youre doing?

Or is this cause truly the single greatest issue the world is currently facing and that we should all be uniting behind it and putting all our dollars, efforts and energies into?

Or should we simply be buying stoves?

What The Frack?!?!?

Natural gas is extracted via a process known as fracking from shale which is located deep beneath the earth's surface.

Fracking process:

1. Wells are drilled vertically over a kilometre deep, then horizontally for some hundreds of metres (hydrofrac zones).

2. About 12-15 million litres of clean drinking water is mixed with over 500 different chemicals and then pumped under high pressure into the well to cause fractures in the shale and release the methane gas stored within the rock. (thats a lot of water for one well, especially considering that there are over 400 000 wells in the USA, i'll let you do the math)

Check out this link to see how many gas mines there are all over the USA:
http://www.propublica.org/special/map-number-of-producing-gas-wells-708

3. Only a small fraction of this water returns to the surface, this water is highly toxic as it now contains hundreds of chemicals.

4. This returned toxic water is then sprayed into areas known as pits, where it is encouraged to evaporate. (evaporating this toxic water results in air pollution/contamination as well!!!)

Problems:

Far too many to list, so here are a couple of the main issues that concern the health of the general population.

  • A number of the chemicals used in the fracking process are well known carcinogens (cancer causing chemicals) and neurotoxins (they pretty much destroy your brain). Now it doesn't take long to realise that you definitely don't want these chemicals anywhere near, let alone in your drinking water.
Unfortunately, for residents who live nearby some of these wells, this is exactly what has happened.............
  • As alluded to earlier, the majority of the toxic water that is pumped underground, remains underground, thus allowing it to mix with and contaminate the clean, drinking water in underground aquifers. Underground aquifers are reached by farmers through their own personal wells and are the main source of water for people who reside on farmland in the USA.
Image from Gasland

The above picture is an example of the condition of a farmer's drinking water, that has a nearby Gas well. This picture is taken from the documentary film called "Gasland", by Josh Fox (Guy with the NY hat and hoodie). This gripping documentary film is a must see for everyone around the world, as Josh states at the end of the documentary that exploratory drilling for gas mines have begun all over the world and they could be in your backyard soon.

I'm not sure about you, but i'm pretty sure my drinking water isn't flammable!!! Oh and i'd like it to stay that way.

If you are sitting there wondering how on earth are we allowing this to happen, i have a simple answer for you......watch Gasland! All will be revealed.

As you will also see in the near future here on "Thought You Ought To Know", gas mines are already well established in Queensland and exploratory drilling has commenced in St Peters in Sydney recently......

If you crave more information right now, check out this short clip  from the aforementioned documentary film by Josh Fox, Gasland.

The Crisis of Capitalism

Check out this awesome cartoon that describes the crisis of capitalism which, in a nutshell, was responsible for the recent global financial crisis(GFC). David Harvey states that the problems are systemic and that until something is done about it the potential for greater financial failures and inequality remain.

High Speed Rail In Australia?

Did you know what it takes to move 1000 people?

1 train (8 carriages)

or

20 buses

or

250-1000cars

The first high speed rail (HSR) in the world was built in Japan way back in 1964, famously known as the bullet train. High Speed Rail has since become a permanent fixture of transport infrastructure throughout Europe, China,  South Korea and Taiwan.

The benefits of high speed rail include:

- run on electricity unlike planes, thus reducing the demand for oil

- reduction in greenhouse gas emissions due to a decrease in the number of plane trips (less oil being   consumed)

- ticket prices immune to raising oil prices, unlike planes and cars

- as renewable electricity replaces coal and gas derived electricity, greenhouse gas emissions from transport would be significantly reduced further.

Mid last year the Greens political party in Australia successfully lobbied for the commencement of a 12 month study analysis on the viability of a HSR service spanning the major cities on Australia's east coast. The study to be completed in June 2011 is assessing the environmental and economic benefit of such a project.

Potential Station Locations: Sunshine Coast - Brisbane - Gold Coast - Casino - Coffs Harbour - Taree - Newcastle - Gosford - Hornsby - Sydney - Campbelltown - Canberra - Albury - Melbourne  .

These trains operate at speeds between 250-500km/hour and can cut long distance journeys by land in half, making them an extremely exciting prospect.

East coast HSR estimated jouney times:

Sydney - Melbourne: 3 hours
Sydney - Gold Coast: 2.5 hours
Sydney - Brisbane: 3 hours
Gold Coast - Brisbane: 30 minutes

If high speed rail intrigues you then you should have a little watch of this video and see these powerhouses in action!

If you still havent had enough of these badboys check out this link and click on where it says "A Realistic Pathway to Very Fast Trains" - It is a document about the potential of HSR in Australia.

Wanted: World's Number 1 Killer

Did you know - The number 1 cause of deaths in the world today are CVD's (Cardiovascular diseases)

Did you know - 29% of global deaths each year are due to CVD's (this figure is constantly rising)

Did you know - Poor diet, lack of exercise and tobacco use are responsible for about 80% of all CVD's

What can we do about it?
It's not rocket surgery! Individuals can reduce their risk of suffering from a CVD simply by exercising regularly, not smoking tobacco (get a vaporiser!), punching people in the face when their second hand smoke blows your way, choosing a diet that is full of fresh fruit and vegetables as well as avoiding foods high in fat, sugar and salt (ie just about all fast food and processed foods) and by maintaining a healthy body weight (refer to the BMI calculator - http://www.mydr.com.au/tools/bodymass)

Check out this link for more information from the World Health Organisation (WHO) about CVD's and the impact that our poor lifestyle choices are having on a global scale.

Must Read!!!

For those of you who were wise enough to watch the video on the previous post (for the stats and figures, not the joke!) here are some more statistics and figures that back it all up. My lovely lady friend was kind enough to have sent me this article and i believe if you remotely care about inequality and social injustice then you must read this article!

Worldwide Economic Crisis

Have a look at the ending credits to what was a pretty classic yet different Will Ferrell movie, The Other Guys. This is some pretty insightful stuff from a Hollywood production about the Worldwide Economic Crisis that we currently find ourselves in. There's a half funny joke at the end as well. Let me know if you need/want an explanation of the whole thing. Enjoy!

Word Of The Century - Sustainability

Greenhouse, by Joost Bakker opened for business this week at The Rocks in Sydney, it is the ultimate environmentally friendly cafe built using recyclable materials, but that's not all. Water is collected on site, waste is recycled, ingredients are grown in pots on the external walls and roof and even the generator that powers the cafe runs on cooking oil!

If Bakkers similar projects in Melbourne and Perth are anything to go by Greenhouse will be the place to eat in Sydney on its month long visit. Situated in the iconic landscape of Sydney Harbour this place is a must see before it packs up and heads off on its international tour at the end of March.

Shame On AC Milan

Tottenham FC recorded one of their greatest victories ever, playing away to European heavyweights AC Milan at the San Siro on Wednesday morning (AEDST), however the game will be remembered for all the wrong reasons. The game was clearly becoming heated with numerous confrontations, yet the referee took very little action, the hostile atmosphere was exacerbated by the crowd who jeered at every call the ref made. I lost count of the number of times a player from the Milanese outfit ran towards the referee, shouting and gesticulating in an unpleasant manner to say the least. Every time Gattuso (AC Milan) was tackled he would begin heckling the player who tackled him, sometimes shaping to grab and strike the player. He even had an altercation with the Assistant Manager of Tottenham Joe Jordan (who is 59!) The referee completely lost control of proceedings by not having the necessary metal (showing enough balls) to not listen to the crowd and control the game, this was highlighted when Mathieu Flamini (AC Milan) lunged in with both feet on Vedran Corluka's (Tottenham) shins and got away with only a yellow card. Corluka appeared in agony and was stretchered off the field, returning later to the bench on crutches. As if the game hadn't provided enough things to talk about, Gattuso decided to resume the argument after the full time whistle, being caught on camera headbutting Joe Jordan before being pulled away by players from both side.

FIFA should have a chat with the NBA and see how good discipline is in their league due to the zero tolerance policy referees have with player's arguing about the calls they make. I believe the NBA have gone too far with players not allowed to show any emotion in response to a call made by the referees, however soccer players are still seen poking and shoving referees, such events should be deemed unacceptable by FIFA and action must be taken to prevent further embarrassment to the World Game by the actions of people like Gattuso.

The Future of Food

What would you do if there were no fruit or vegetables at your local supermarket?

For years now we have heard how the world will soon run out of vital commodities such as fossil fuels, freshwater and IP addresses. Lets all hope we don't run out of internet space as well! All you South Park fans will understand what i mean, for those who don't, get some South Park in you, its hilarious and informative (Season 12, episode 6 http://www.southparkhere.com/category/south-park-season-12/)

Anyway, the world is finding more and more substitutes for fossil fuels, desalination plants are becoming more popular and i'm sure some computer whiz will figure out that the internet just needed a reboot (again, watch the episode already!). But, did you ever think the world was running out of food? Some people say its not a problem of the future, they believe it is happening right now.

The World Bank said that its 'food-price index increased by 15% over the last 3 months as well as estimating that the rising costs of food have pushed 44 million people into poverty since June 2010'. Whilst the impact this increase has had on ourselves right now hasn't been too harsh, this is because food only accounts for 10% of the household budget in places like Europe and USA, it is the developing countries (where households spend up to 75% of their budget on food)  that people are suffering most.

Power to the People!

After 18 days of nationwide protest, Hosni Mubarak today stepped down from his post as President of Egypt. Today marks the beginning as much as the end to one of the most significant events in recent history in the Middle East. 2 months ago President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali of Tunisia was ousted from his position by mass protest in similar fashion. These events have sparked great fear amongst the dictatorships in neighbouring countries such as Saudi Arabia as many believe the people of Egypt and Tunisia have started a domino effect that could see the rest of the Middle East rise up against their oppressive dictators as they seek economic and political reforms, starting with the election of a democratic government.
