What would you do if there were no fruit or vegetables at your local supermarket?
For years now we have heard how the world will soon run out of vital commodities such as fossil fuels, freshwater and IP addresses. Lets all hope we don't run out of internet space as well! All you South Park fans will understand what i mean, for those who don't, get some South Park in you, its hilarious and informative (Season 12, episode 6 http://www.southparkhere.com/category/south-park-season-12/)
Anyway, the world is finding more and more substitutes for fossil fuels, desalination plants are becoming more popular and i'm sure some computer whiz will figure out that the internet just needed a reboot (again, watch the episode already!). But, did you ever think the world was running out of food? Some people say its not a problem of the future, they believe it is happening right now.
The World Bank said that its 'food-price index increased by 15% over the last 3 months as well as estimating that the rising costs of food have pushed 44 million people into poverty since June 2010'. Whilst the impact this increase has had on ourselves right now hasn't been too harsh, this is because food only accounts for 10% of the household budget in places like Europe and USA, it is the developing countries (where households spend up to 75% of their budget on food) that people are suffering most.
